Murphy Radio 1961 Pictured below is the B485 transistor radio. This is an updated version of the first transistor radio, the B385, introduced by Murphy. The circuit is the same as the B385, and the cabinet is very similar. It was designed to be portable, and ran from two PP1 6v batteries. It was able to receive only medium and long waves, and waveband selection was via the pushbuttons on the top of the receiver, the third pushbutton was used to turn the receiver off. It was supplied with a leather carrying case. The leather case was of a very high quality, and although these receivers are not often seen, when they are located the leather case always seems to be in good condition. An aerial socket was fitted to the cabinet to enable an external aerial to be connected. Transistor Line-up: PXA101 x2, PXA102 x2, PXB103, PXC131 x2. Murphy was still producing valve receivers, and they were cheaper than transistor radios.

left is model U602, which is a VHF only receiver. The day of the valve was
clearly numbered though, as this isn't a new design. It is simply the model U502
from 1959 in the same cabinet, but with a marginally restyled decorative metal
plate and fittings to the front of the receiver. The receiver main body is black
plastic, as opposed to sprayed bakelite seen in the 1959 model. It actually
looks quite good, and of course doesn't suffer the problem of obvious scratching
over time that so often spoils the appearance of sprayed cabinets. Valve line-up
is 10L14, 10F18, 10F18, 10D2, 10PL12, U381. (Kindly donated by Mr P. Pearson).
