Murphy Radio
1949 continued
Also introduced in 1949 was the U144 portable mains receiver. This
is quite a forward looking design, the two case halves are identical
and the set therefore has no front or back. Two examples are shown left, and
both are the original sprayed finish. Examples
are seen either with a contrasting relief area of a slightly different shade
around the tuning dial or sprayed all one colour. All receivers featured the rather daring choice of pastel
blue control knobs set into the handle. I
occasionally see these sets in unpainted brown bakelite at collectors fairs etc,
but closer inspection has always revealed traces of spray paint in difficult to
get at screw recesses or similar. Therefore
I suspect that if the cases have become too scratched the owner (or dealer) has
removed all the paint rather than respray or touch-in colour.
In fact the set doesn’t look too bad in unfinished bakelite, but is of
course not original. Valve line up is 10C1,
10F9, 10LD11, 10P13, U404.
